Another fantastic (and amazingly cheap) natural-media drawing/painting program: ArtRage. It’s simple to use but quite powerful (and has things like Layers with all the usual blending modes). There’s a free version (with a subset of the tools) to try it out… and it supports Mac and Windows.

The trouble with these lists is that there’s always some program you think should be on the list.
I always liked “Dogwaffle” and “Anim8or”, while very basic, is a great free program if one is starting out in 3D.
July 5th, 2009 at 8:47 am

July 7th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
The big boys should sit up and take note. You don’t need to charge an arm and a leg to the average home user in order to to create stunning work with the use of their software. I wish they would learn that they are losing money in the long run because they charge so much for their packages. Reduce your prices, or better still, donate your programmes. In the long run you’ll still win and make money.

Is there any way to use these programs within a website?
I want clients to be able to upload their own pictures and then edit them on the fly before they put them on a t-shirt or mug.
Let me know. Thanks!

Nice list, but there is absolutley no reason why you would need to download 25 design programs. Pick a few you like which do different things and stick with them.
