Hello and welcome to Creative Nerds. In this design tutorial, we’ll be sharing with you how to create a spirograph design effect using Photoshop. So firstly, we want to start off by selecting the custom shape tool and we want to select the drop-down next to shape and we want to select the cog icon, then select the all option, and we want replace all of the current shapes with the all option so select okay and then we’ll be given a list of shapes we can choose to use.
So we’re going to select the hexagon and we’re simply going to draw the shape out in the middle of the canvas. It’s important to hold onto shift while you’re dragging the shape out in the middle of the canvas…just gonna center it, go back to the custom shape tool, take the fill off and we’re gonna add a one-pixel stroke which is black but could be any color of your choosing, and select the direction tool.
We’re then gonna right click on our shape layer and select duplicate layer, then select the OK button. We’re then going to select Ctrl+alt+T what was set in our new shape layer and we’re simply gonna hold on to shift to keep it in proportion again. Make it slightly smaller, that is perfect, and we’re going to rotate, also, the shape. Excellent. Now we’re going to hold onto that new shape that we’ve just duplicated and select Ctrl+alt+shift+T and we’re just going to keep selecting that hotkey until it fills out to create our unique effect.
So that’s it, that’s the end outcome, that’s how you create a spirograph design effect using Photoshop. It’s a really useful technique and it’s one that could be applied to almost any shape and will create a great, unique effect. Hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial and hope it’s one that you can use time and time again in your future design projects.
